Recent changes in the qualifications required for recruitment as an Assistant Professor have been announced by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The UGC has made a significant decision regarding the mandatory Ph.D. qualification for assistant professor positions. The chairperson, Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, shared through his Twitter handle that the Ph.D. qualification for appointment as an Assistant Professor would be optional starting from July 1, 2023. This means that having a Ph.D. will no longer be compulsory for individuals seeking to be recruited as assistant professors.
Prior to this update, the UGC had extended the date of applicability of the Ph.D. requirement to July 2023 due to Covid-related issues that slowed the process. However, the UGC has now reverted to the previous system where the minimum criteria for recruitment will be based on the National Eligibility Test (NET), State Eligibility Test (SET), and State Level Eligibility Test (SLET).
This change opens up opportunities for individuals who may not have a Ph.D. but meet the other specified criteria to apply for assistant professor positions in academic institutions. It provides flexibility in the qualifications required for those aspiring to pursue a career in academia and contribute to the field of education.
