Is the University of Oregon on the Common App? (Spoiler Alert: It’s Complicated!)

Let’s be honest, applying to college is a bit like trying to navigate a maze blindfolded while juggling flaming torches. There are deadlines, essays, recommendations, and, of course, the endless barrage of applications. So, when you’re trying to find your way through this academic jungle, the question of whether a university accepts the Common App is a big deal.

And you know what? You’re not alone in wondering if the University of Oregon (UO), with its iconic “O” and legendary football team, is on the Common App. It’s a question that has plagued many a hopeful Duck.

The Short Answer: Yes, but…

The good news is, the University of Oregon does accept the Common App, but it’s only for freshmen. So, if you’re a transfer student, you’ll have to go through their online application process. I know, it’s like they’re trying to make college admission more complicated than it needs to be!

Why the UO Got Fancy with Applications

You might be thinking, “Why not just use the Common App for everyone?” Well, dear reader, you’re not the first to ask. The UO is a bit of a maverick when it comes to college applications. They decided to embrace the Common App in 2020, becoming the first public institution on the West Coast to join the club. This was a big deal, and it was probably a little confusing for everyone involved.

A Deeper Dive into the Common App at UO

Here’s the deal: The UO allows freshmen to apply through either their own online application or the Common App. So, you’ve got options, which is kind of nice, right? But, let’s not forget that the UO is a “test-optional” school, meaning that you don’t have to submit standardized test scores to be considered for admission.

Navigating the UO’s Application Process: A Guide for the Perplexed

  • Step 1: Choose your weapon (application, that is). You’ve got two options: the UO’s online application or the Common App.
  • Step 2: Fill it out, but don’t sweat the small stuff. The UO wants to know about your academic record, but they’re not requiring ACT or SAT scores.
  • Step 3: Pay the piper, or try to avoid it. You’ll need to pay a nonrefundable $65 application fee, unless you qualify for a waiver (more on that later).

Fee Waivers: A Glimpse of Hope in the Application Maze

The UO offers application fee waivers to eligible freshmen who meet certain financial hardship criteria. They also offer waivers to active duty military members and their dependents. So, if you’re in one of those categories, don’t despair! There’s a chance you can avoid the dreaded application fee.

Transfer Students: The Common App is Not Your Friend

Now, let’s talk about those of you who are transfer students. The UO doesn’t accept the Common App for transfers. Instead, you’ll need to use their online application process. You’ll need to submit your transcripts, a statement of purpose, and other supporting documents.

The UO’s GPA Requirements: A Bit of a Curveball

The UO has a minimum GPA requirement for both freshmen and transfer students. For freshmen, the minimum GPA is 3.5. For transfer students, it’s 2.25 for Oregon residents and 2.50 for non-residents. So, it’s best to have a solid academic record if you’re hoping to be a Duck.

The UO: A Place to Be Yourself (and Get a Great Education!)

The University of Oregon is a great school, known for its beautiful campus, vibrant student life, and strong academic programs. They are a “test-optional” school, which is a big plus for many students. And while their application process might seem a little convoluted, it’s all part of their effort to create a diverse and inclusive student body.

So, if you’re thinking about applying to the UO, don’t be intimidated by the application process. Just take a deep breath, follow the instructions, and remember that there are resources available to help you along the way. And who knows, maybe you’ll be cheering on the Ducks in Autzen Stadium before you know it!
