Is Race a Problem in Attending Howard University?

When discussing whether race is a problem at Howard University, it’s essential to first recognize what Howard represents. As a historically Black college and university (HBCU), Howard stands as a cornerstone in the education of African Americans and has a rich history rooted in promoting Black excellence. However, it’s not only a sanctuary for students of African descent; students from various backgrounds can and do attend. The question, therefore, prompts us to explore the complexities that arise regarding race within its student body.

While some may perceive race as an obstacle in the atmosphere at Howard, many current students argue otherwise. The university maintains an inclusive environment. On average, HBCUs see about 12% of their student bodies composed of white students and even up to 20% at some institutions. This indicates that Howard, while predominantly Black, welcomes individuals from various racial backgrounds. As one student noted, “There are other white people that go there, but obviously you will be in the minority.” This reinforces the notion that while there is a predominant culture, it is not exclusionary.

Furthermore, some perspectives suggest that while there might be whispers of sentiment claiming non-Black students shouldn’t attend HBCUs, these voices make up an extreme minority. Those who have attended Howard commend the diversity within “Blackness” found on campus. A current junior expressed how much they appreciate the variety of experiences and backgrounds among their peers, showcasing that the community is far from monolithic.

Conclusion: Navigating Race at Howard

In conclusion, race at Howard University is complex but ultimately manageable. The environment promotes acceptance and understanding among various races. While discussions around race can undoubtedly arise, they amount to rich dialogues that enhance the educational experience rather than detracting from it. As noted by multiple students, it is an opportunity for growth, learning, and exposure to the depth of Black culture—something truly powerful for all students involved.
