Is Columbia University Having Classes on Columbus Day?

Many students ponder whether they’ll have classes on Columbus Day, especially those attending prestigious institutions like Columbia University. The question, “Is Columbia University having classes on Columbus Day?” is quite relevant as this federal holiday often sparks discussions on education and tradition.

At Columbia University, Columbus Day is not an observed holiday when it comes to their academic calendar. In fact, for the current semester, classes will continue as usual on the second Monday of October, which falls on October 12 this year. Students should prepare to attend their lessons without interruptions, despite the significance of the day.

Interestingly, while some universities grant a day off for either Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples’ Day (the latter is gaining traction in recent years as a celebrated alternative), Columbia has opted not to do so. They provide a series of distinct breaks throughout the semester, but neither October nor February vacations appear on their calendar. This can be a point of frustration for students who look forward to some respite in the fall.

Breaking Down Columbia’s Academic Calendar

Columbia University’s academic structure typically includes five weekdays off with options that don’t align with national holidays like Columbus Day or Presidents Day. Breaks include significant holidays such as Labor Day and Thanksgiving.

“We don’t get Columbus Day nor Presidents Day off. Wouldn’t it be nice to enjoy some extra time off in October?”

Moreover, students often consider how Columbia’s choices in observed holidays impact their educational experience as they balance rigorous coursework with well-deserved breaks.

What Can Students Do?

If you’re a student at Columbia, don’t count on using this particular day to relax or catch up on assignments just yet. Instead, why not take advantage of your regular academic day to dive into studies or engage with your peers in meaningful discussions during class? Columbus Day at Columbia simply becomes another opportunity for a productive Monday!

The dialogue around what holidays are recognized at universities continues to evolve, reflecting broader cultural and societal shifts. For students interested in advocating for any changes or discussing alternatives, open dialogues exist within campus communities.
