Navigating the Labyrinth: A Guide to Adding Collaborators on the Common App

The Common App. That oh-so-familiar name that sends shivers down the spines of high school seniors and their equally stressed-out parents. It’s a digital beast, a labyrinth of forms, essays, and deadlines that can feel like a never-ending quest. But fear not, intrepid applicants! We’re here to conquer one of its many mystical challenges: adding collaborators to your Common App.

Let’s be real, the Common App is as user-friendly as a pack of rabid squirrels. It’s a system designed by people who clearly haven’t had to wrestle with the anxieties of college applications. But fear not, dear reader, for we shall illuminate the path to adding collaborators like a beacon of hope in the stormy seas of college applications.

First, let’s address the elephant (or rather, the rabid squirrel) in the room: what exactly is a collaborator?

Collaborators are essentially your trusted advisors in the college application process. Think of them as your personal cheerleaders, proofreaders, and sanity-savers. They can be teachers, guidance counselors, parents, or even friends who are familiar with the Common App’s intricacies and can offer invaluable insights.

So, how do you add these invaluable collaborators to your Common App?

Step 1: Find the “My Colleges” Tab

Think of the “My Colleges” tab as the control center of your Common App universe. It’s where you manage your college list, track deadlines, and, most importantly, manage your collaborators.

Step 2: The “Recommenders and FERPA” Section

This section is your portal to the world of recommendations. It’s where you’ll invite your chosen collaborators to join your epic quest for college acceptance.

Step 3: The “Teacher” or “Other Recommender” Section

This is where you’ll find your trusty allies. Click on the “Teacher” or “Other Recommender” box, depending on the type of recommendation you need.

Step 4: The “Assign” Button

Once you’ve selected your collaborator, hit the “Assign” button. This will send an email invitation to your chosen recommender, asking them to join your quest.

But What If Your School Uses Naviance?

Naviance is like the Common App’s cooler, more tech-savvy cousin. If your school uses Naviance, it acts as a separate platform for managing recommendations. If this is the case, you won’t be able to assign recommenders directly through the Common App. Instead, you’ll need to go through the Naviance portal to invite your collaborators.

The Magic of Counselors

Want to add a college counselor to your Common App? It’s a bit different. You’ll need to select “Request Recommendation” under either the “Academic” or “General” section, depending on the type of recommendation you need.

Teacher Accounts: A Quick Guide

Teachers who want to be recommenders on the Common App need to create a teacher profile. This is a pretty straightforward process:

  1. Go to your educator account.
  2. Click on “Features” and select “College Planning.”
  3. Click “Manage” next to “Common App.”
  4. Click “Create” to create a new profile.
  5. Fill out the form and click “Complete.”

Collaboration is Key

Adding collaborators can make a world of difference in your Common App journey. They can guide you through the process, offer feedback on your essays, and ensure your application is polished and error-free.

Think of your collaborators as the wise old wizards in your college application quest. They’ve seen it all and can share their wisdom to help you navigate the treacherous path to acceptance.

Beyond the Common App: The Importance of Collaboration

The Common App isn’t the only challenge you’ll face in the college application process. Collaboration is key to success in every aspect of your journey. Whether you’re working on essays, building your resume, or preparing for interviews, having a support system can make all the difference.

Embrace the Power of Collaboration

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Your collaborators are there to support you and to make the process a little less daunting. Remember, you’re not alone in this journey. Reach out to your collaborators, ask for guidance, and don’t hesitate to share your anxieties and celebrate your victories.
