The Common App: A Love-Hate Relationship (Or, Why You Can’t Find Your Dream College on This App)

Let’s be real, the Common App is like that friend who’s always trying to be helpful but usually ends up causing more trouble. It promises to simplify the college application process, yet it seems to have a knack for making things more complicated.

One of the most common gripes: “I can’t find the college I want on the Common App!”

It’s like trying to find a specific song on a playlist curated by your grandma – it’s just not there.

So, why the missing college drama?

Well, the Common App isn’t a magical portal to every single college in the land. It’s a platform that allows you to apply to a bunch of colleges using a single application. But, sadly, not all colleges are on board.

Think of it like this: The Common App is a popular party, but not everyone gets invited.

Why Some Colleges Are Partying Without the Common App

There are a few reasons why certain colleges choose to stick with their own application systems:

  • Independent Spirits: Some colleges, like religiously-affiliated universities, feel their unique values and admissions processes are better represented through their own application forms. They’re like the cool kids who have their own secret club – you have to apply through them directly.
  • Military Might: Military schools often have their own application processes, which can include specific requirements like physical fitness tests. They’re the ones who have their own dress code and a whole system of ranks.
  • Public School Pride: Some public or state schools prefer to handle applications themselves, often because they have specific requirements related to their state. These schools are the ones with the coolest state flags and local pride.

But, How Do I Actually Find My College?

Don’t despair! You haven’t been thrown out on the application street just yet.

  1. The College Website: The first stop? The college website. It’s where you’ll find the official application portal (if it’s not on Common App). Don’t be afraid to click around and search for those admissions links.
  2. The Common App “Hidden” Treasure: You can still add colleges to your Common App list, even if they don’t accept the Common App itself. Just use the “add button” in the search results list or the “Add to My Colleges” button on their info screen.
  3. The “I Can’t Find The College I’m Looking For” Button: If you’re still lost, there’s a “I can’t find the college I’m looking for” option. Click on it and you’ll be guided to a list of colleges that don’t use Common App.

Common App: A Helpful Tool, Sometimes…

The Common App can still be a helpful tool, even if your dream college is a bit of a rebel. Remember, it’s about finding the right fit for you, and sometimes that means going beyond the Common App’s party.

Remember, the college application process is like a puzzle, and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.
