Position Description
Full-time, academic year (9 month), lecturer position within the Natural Resources Management and
Environmental Sciences (NRES) Department at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo. Beginning date is September
7, 2017. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Cal Poly has a tradition of excellence in teaching and our motto is “Learn by Doing.” Strong interests in laboratory/field-based
undergraduate teaching along with excellent written and oral communication skills are required. The successful candidate will teach
introductory soil science and soil morphology and classification. The successful candidate will participate in Future Farmers of America
(FFA) land judging state finals held on campus annually and nurture overall student development.

Introductory Soil Science, (SS 121: Biological, chemical, physical and genetic properties of soils. Application of scientific principles to
solving land use, water management, and soil conservation problems. Interpretation of soils data for making environmental decisions,
applying management practices, and sustainable food production) and Soil Morphology (SS 321-Identification of soil morphological and site
properties. Correlation of soil physical and chemical properties with soil taxonomy and land use. Techniques of interpretations for
agriculture, forest lands, wetlands, range lands and urban development) are taken by all NRES majors as well as by students from many of the
departments within the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences. The successful candidate will share teaching
responsibilities for these courses with tenure-track and part-time lecturers within the department.

Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills
M.S. degree in Soil Science or closely related field by the starting date
is required. Special consideration will be given to candidates with a record of excellence in teaching. Excellent written and oral
communication skills and strong interest in undergraduate teaching is required. This position requires extensive interaction with students,
faculty, staff, the general public and industry groups. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to diversity, and those who have
international experience or the desire to cultivate international links, are of particular interest.

Preferred Qualifications / Skills
Ph.D. degree in Soil Science preferred.

The NRES Department offers B.S. degrees in Environmental Earth and Soil Sciences,
Environmental Management and Protection, and Forestry and Natural Resources, and an M.S. in Agriculture with specialization in Soil Science
as well as an M.S. in Forestry Sciences. The programs enroll approximately 650 undergraduate students and 12 graduate students.
