Chair of the Department of Social Work

The University of South Dakota invites applications for the position of
Chair of the Department of Social Work.

The Chair is the administrative head of a unit with more than 280 graduate and
undergraduate students. The program is located on main campus in Vermillion and in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Department of Social Work
is one of nine departments housed in the School of Health Sciences (SHS). The school of Health Sciences and the Sanford School of Medicine
share a mutual vision for interprofessional education and are both housed under the Division of Health Affairs.

The Department of
Social Work delivers a Baccalaureate degree in Social Work with an optional specialization in Child Welfare. Additionally, the Department of
Social Work delivers a master’s in social work (M.S.W) which is the first program of its kind in the state of South Dakota. Both
programs are fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

Enrolling over 2,100 students, the USD School of Health
Sciences is the only comprehensive school of health sciences in the state and is a leader in interprofessional education. The School of
Health Sciences is home for eleven graduate degree majors, six undergraduate degree majors, four minors, and five certificate programs. This
includes Addiction Counseling and Prevention, Dental Hygiene, Health Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science, Nursing, Occupational Therapy,
Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies, Public Health, and Social Work. In addition, the SHS is home for the Center for Prevention of
Child Maltreatment and the Interprofessional Health Education Center.

The Chair position is a 12-month full time administrative
appointment with a rank of Associate or Full Professor. Salary and tenure track are negotiable and commensurate with education and
experience.  The Chair should be a visionary leader who will be able to grow the interprofessional education mission, service, and
research and galvanize student and faculty engagement in these endeavors.  The Chair should also be able to provide effective
management of the department’s resources, recognize and reward excellence, and promote accountability. The position will develop and assist
with implementation of departmental, school, and university strategic plans. The Chair will effectively communicate with faculty and staff,
clearly establish goals, and continue strong working relationships with many and varied constituencies and stakeholders within South Dakota
and region.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants for this position must have:

  • a doctorate in
    Social Work or related field and an MSW in Social Work from a CSWE, Council on Social Work Education, accredited program.
  • demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and service commensurate with an appointment of a tenured associate or full professor,
    including a successful record of grant funding (e.g., track record of publications and/ or grant funding). 
  • a strong record of
    teaching and experience with CSWE accreditation standards at both the Baccalaureate and master’s level. 
  • a minimum of two
    years of social work practice experience with social work license. 
  • administrative experience in a combined BSW/ MSW program and/or
    evidence of leadership ability in social
  • a minimum of two years of post-masters practice experience
  • vision to lead a
    Department that emphasizes research excellence and quality undergraduate and graduate instruction. 
  • demonstrated commitment to
    community engagement, diversity and inclusion.
  • exceptional written and verbal skills are anticipated as well as a commitment to the
    professional and ethical standards and principles of equal opportunity, diversity, and affirmative action

  • demonstrated excellence in promoting student
    engagement. 
  • experience cultivating community ties 
  • experience with online education 
  • experience in grant
    funding, fundraising, and budget management
