Gardner-Webb University seeks applications and nominations for an energetic and engaging leader who will effectively lead the School of
Education as Dean. The School of Education, comprised of sixteen academically well-credentialed and experienced educators and 35+ adjunct
instructors, offers multiple degrees to over 800 students at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. Bachelor’s degrees lead to
teacher licensure at the elementary, middle and secondary levels as well as in multiple subject areas. Additional programs currently being
developed and/or implemented include Birth-Kindergarten Education, a concentration in Exceptional Children and a Bachelor of Arts in
Organizational Leadership. Masters Degrees include programs in Instructional Technology, Teacher Leadership and Executive Leadership
Studies. The Educational Specialists Degrees leads to licensure at the superintendent level. Doctor of Education Degrees are offered with
concentrations in Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership and Organizational Leadership. Programs are offered in both
face-to-face and online modes of delivery and doctoral programs are offered in a blended online and low-residence format. Multiple sites
across North Carolina are used for delivery of cohort designed graduate courses. Undergraduate degrees are offered in both traditional
face-to-face classes and online though the Degree Completion Program. The school embraces a liberal arts general education for its
undergraduate programs and values the integration of theory and practical experience at every level of professional education. The School
also engages the Christian mission of the University through a vision of service to community and the world in the context of Christian

The Dean reports to the Associate Provost for Professional and Graduate Studies and works collaboratively with the
President and Provost.

The Dean of the School of Education will exercise leadership by

  • Leading the faculty in ongoing
    refinement of the School’s vision and strategic plan,
  • Managing a highly qualified faculty and encouraging faculty development,
    including multiple program chairs,
  • Evaluating faculty and staff,
  • Guiding the faculty in curriculum development and the
    identification of new programs where appropriate,
  • Recruiting, selecting, assigning, and supervising a large cadre of adjunct
  • Engaging in assessment and accreditation efforts to ensure the school is appropriately credentialed,
  • Communicating effectively with full-time and adjunct faculty to ensure that student learning outcomes and program objectives are
  • Coordinating program deployment and improvement with department faculty and university leadership,
  • Supervising all programs to ensure quality of student outcomes,
  • Directing doctoral dissertation research and completion
  • Advancing the School’s network of external relationships in the region and internationally,
  • Assisting the
    University with fund-raising and public relations efforts as needed,
  • Managing the School’s budget,
  • Serving on University
    assigned committees and councils.

Other negotiable duties may include

  • Coordination of specific graduate programs,
  • Management of activities of the Center for Innovative Leadership Development housed in the School of Education,
  • Teaching in
    undergraduate and/or graduate programs within the School,
  • Chairing doctoral dissertation committees

The ideal candidate
will demonstrate

  • Proven leadership skills in higher education and/or K-12 schools,
  • Outstanding communication
  • Experience in higher education, including teaching,
  • An appropriate record of scholarship,
  • Familiarity
    with assessment and CAEP accreditation,
  • Support for online education and the rapidly evolving world of new educational

Basic expectations include

  • Graduate degree in a relevant field, doctorate preferred,
  • Personal
    commitment to the Christian faith,
  • Collegiality, integrity, good will and a sense of humor,
  • Commitment to student
    learning, particularly undergraduate education.

nationally accredited in good standing with NCATE, which merged with TEAC to become the Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Preparation
(CAEP) in 2013. Gardner-Webb looks forward to maintaining our national accreditation status following our first CAEP accreditation review,
scheduled for April 2019.
