The Gem & Mineral Museum at the University of Arizona is in search of a Assistant Curator, Freeport-McMoRan. The Assistant Curator, Freeport-McMoRan is responsible for inventorying and documenting all museum artifacts and specimens. This position also develops and maintains an effective database. This position is responsible for photographing and identifying specimens that belong to display and research collections and will work closely to identify specimens that may not have previously been properly identified. The ideal candidate will be driven and have the ability to work independently as well as have keen attention to detail.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Implement and maintain a database of all museum specimens. Tasks include entering object descriptions, characteristics and acquisition details, as well as photographs, documenting historical significance and other documents and information as relevant. Assists with accessioning and de-accessioning specimens/artifacts.
- Ensuring all specimens/artifacts are photographed. Tasks include taking the photographs and uploading images to the database. Utilize photoshop or equivalent photo editing software to prepare images for uploading.
- Coordinates with the Exhibits Specialist on any development and implementation of exhibits. Recommends and selects specimens/artifacts, responsible for cleaning and preservation of the objects, and for rotating specimens/artifacts in and out of exhibits as needed.
- Responsible for packing and transporting any donations and loans. Ensuring safety and following risk management fine arts guidelines. Travel may be required in order to deliver or pickup artifacts.
- Assist with public outreach as needed. Possibly interact with public during museum hours and at special events to inform on specimens/artifacts. Plans work for museum volunteers and possibly Docents.
- Additional duties may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a relevant field preferred.
- GIA-GG Gemological Inst of America – Graduate Gemologist
- FGA Fellow of Gemological Associate of Great Britain
- Studies in: Geosciences, MIS, database management
