The Institute of Health Economics is recruiting a Senior Health Economist to provide leadership on projects in our portfolio of health economics work. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Health Economics or a closely related field, and a minimum of eight years relevant experience including  leadership responsibilities.

The Senior Health Economist will play a central role in our health technology assessment work program. They will lead projects developing innovative health technology assessment research methods and be a key point of contact between IHE and government HTA sponsors. They will also support the Director and Associate Director to expand the scope and scale of IHE HTA activity. The Senior Health Economist will also work with partners in academia, professional societies, and other not-for-profit organizations to develop and deliver research projects. This is a management position that maintains significant opportunity to do hands on work.

The successful candidate will be involved in the ongoing development of our work program. The post-holder will be expected to make significant contributions and provide thought leadership as well a project supervision including the development of lifecycle health technology assessment capacity within IHE, economic evaluation of digital health initiatives, the development of innovative methods for evaluating expensive and complex health technologies such as gene and regenerative medicine technologies, as well as post-adoption technology monitoring and re-evaluation criteria using RWE. This is an opportunity for a motivated individual to influence Canadian and international standards and practices in the evaluation and reimbursement of innovative technologies.  

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Management of staff and research projects
  • Contribute to leadership and strategic planning of the health economics team
  • Leading the development of methodology for the evaluation of innovative and/or complex health technologies (including drugs, gene and regenerative technologies)
  • Contributing to business development through drafting proposals for competitively funded research grants and for government and other project sponsors
  • Opportunity to develop independent research program
  • Analysis of data and presentation of results to a range of stakeholders
  • Preparation of results for submission to peer-reviewed journals, reports to project funders, or in other formats as required


  • PhD in Health Economics or a related field
  • A minimum of eight years relevant experience, including leadership roles
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong inter-personal skills are essential
  • Evidence of successful working in a multidisciplinary team
  • Applicants with a specialization in health technology assessment, decision analytic modelling, cost-effectiveness analyses, or economic evaluations alongside clinical trials would be an asset
  • Knowledge of Canadian health care systems would be an asset

The IHE is a not-for-profit organization that assists decision-makers in health policy and practice with the results from economic evaluations, costing, organizational performance, and cost-effectiveness analyses, and with syntheses of findings from research in health technology assessment (HTA). We specialize in producing health economic evidence including decision analytic modelling, econometric analysis, HTA, and knowledge transfer/exchange.
