The Royal College of Art (RCA) is a unique postgraduate institution devoted to art and design. Founded in 1837, it is ranked as the world’s number one art and design university*, with campuses in Kensington and Battersea, London. Alumni include filmmaker Sir Ridley Scott, designer Sir James Dyson, artists Tracey Emin and David Hockney, fashion designer Erdem and textile designer Orla Kiely.
Philanthropy plays a significant role in the life of the RCA: gifts from alumni, companies and other benefactors allow the College to flourish. The RCA is currently in the planning stages of a major £100m comprehensive capital campaign to realise its ambitious new strategic academic vision. This will support the development of the RCA’s new Herzog & de Meuron building at Battersea South and the revitalisation of its historic home in Kensington. A £54m challenge grant from the UK government forms the cornerstone of this campaign: philanthropy will be the enabler.
The College is looking for an outstanding individual to become its new director of development & alumni relations. Working closely with the Rector and senior RCA leaders, the new director will develop a robust strategy to increase philanthropic engagement substantially, execute the campaign and lead a team to ensure its successful delivery.
The successful candidate will have a proven track record in fundraising and have experience of either leading or being close to the centre of a major campaign. They will be an excellent communicator, passionate about the work of the RCA and able to articulate its vision in a compelling manner. They are likely to have occupied a leadership role in development in the higher education, cultural or heritage sectors, although the RCA is open to applications from those with a track record in high-level institutional advancement in other contexts.
