This is an exciting opportunity to join our team on the MSc Psychodynamic Counselling & Psychotherapy with Children & Adolescents.

Based within the Department of Psychosocial Studies, this is an exciting opportunity to join our teaching team on the MSc Psychodynamic Counselling & Psychotherapy with Children & Adolescents.

Teaching will be available beginning September/October 2018 for 30 weeks across three terms (all sessions 1¼ hours, daytimes; exact contact hours may vary).

Your main responsibility will be the preparation, teaching, administration, pastoral care and assessment of the programme. You will deliver teaching to Birkbeck students in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully and undertake all related course administrative and assessment duties as required.

Specific activities may vary according to the needs of the course and will be determined by the programme director however they are likely to include the following:

MSc Psychodynamic Counselling & Psychotherapy with Children & Adolescents:
Year 1 (Mondays) – theory, mother/infant observation, work discussion/counselling workshop, experiential group – approximately 100-130 contact hours (exact role tbc).

All required preparation, teaching, tutorials, weekly staff meetings, administration and assessment including marking connected with those contact hours. The posts also involve attending a minimum of one Birkbeck open evening (usually a Thursday), attending an annual 2 day internal conference, attending an annual away day and possibly assisting the Programme Director with candidate selection and interviewing applicants for the programme.

Selection criteria


  • Qualification in psychodynamic psychotherapy/counselling plus suitable post-qualification experience;
  • Relevant teaching experience;
  • Experience of working as a psychotherapist or counsellor in the public sector;
  • Ability to teach on the required day;
  • Clinical experience of working with children and adolescents.

In addition it is desirable that candidates have:

  • Experience of teaching adult learners (particularly in HE);
  • Knowledge and experience of group relations;
  • Experience of teaching at post-graduate level;
  • Experience of teaching mother/infant observation seminars is desirable.
