The Sociology Chair at Queens is seen as providing a key contribution to enhancing the reputation and standing of the discipline within the School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work and the University. This significant appointment, as part of a strategic investment, will provide first class leadership to further strengthen Sociology on both a national and international level. The successful candidate will make a substantial contribution to the research and teaching activities of Sociology within the School, will provide academic and research leadership and mentoring, and will enhance the School’s international collaborations and research networks. In this, the successful candidate will be supported by an experienced and energetic academic and administrative team. The university’s flagship interdisciplinary research institutes and centres such as the Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice and the Centre for Evidence and Social Innovation offer opportunities for engagement with a critical mass of excellent researchers across a wide range of disciplines in world class research facilities.

The successful candidate must have:
- Primary degree and/or postgraduate degree in one of the social sciences.
- PhD in Sociology or closely related subject area.
- Recognised expert in chosen research specialism, in the discipline of Sociology.
- A sustained record of research publications of international excellence.
- Proven track record of attracting and supervising research students.
- Evidence of current major collaborative research activities including securing grant income.
- Evidence of research impact.
- Proven ability to deliver high quality teaching in Sociology at all levels.
- Experience of curriculum development.
