Remuneration: The successful applicant will receive a MADA Research Living Allowance and Tuition Fee Remission Scholarship, up to $1,500 Relocation Allowance and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single policy. The Opportunity

The XYX Lab within the Faculty of Art Design and Architecture (MADA) at Monash University invites applications for a fully funded, 3-year PhD scholarship for commencement in Semester 1, 2019. The scholarship provides a stipend of $27,082 per annum tax exempt for three years along with additional travel support.

The MADA XYX Lab produces knowledge about how space and design shape the causes, consequences, and approaches to understanding, controlling, and preventing gender inequity in Australia.

We seek applications from international candidates with a background in design research or related discipline. The PhD will work under the supervision of Dr Nicole Kalms and Professor Naomi Stead as part of a larger project around challenges to the safety of women in public transport places. Within the context of global urbanisation and shifting gender roles, proactive design strategies for an inclusive future of public transport become increasingly important. This project examines public transport space (via case study analysis) through the experiences of women with the aim to reduce risk and fear. This will be achieved through a proactive approach that shifts the responsibility of safety away from victims, towards prevention of sexual violence through strategic spatial design.

Candidate Requirements

This scholarship opportunity is open to international applicants only.

The successful applicant will have an excellent academic track record in a design or related discipline, and will be comfortable conducting qualitative case study research. Skills or experience in gender equity related work would be viewed favourably.
