The State University of New York (SUNY) College at Oneonta invites applications for the position of Dean of the School of Liberal Arts in the newly restructured Division of Academic Affairs. Located in the hills of Central New York, SUNY Oneonta is a mid-size, public, liberal arts and sciences college with a pre-professional focus. The College enrolls approximately 6,000 students in a wide variety of bachelor’s degree programs and a number of graduate certificates and degrees. The School of Liberal Arts includes eleven departments: Africana and Latino Studies, Art, Communication and Media, English, Foreign Languages and Literatures, History, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Theatre and Women’s and Gender Studies. The Dean will report to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean is the chief academic, fiscal, and administrative officer for the School of Liberal Arts. The Dean provides strategic leadership for all programs in the School and promotes and supports activities that advance teaching, learning, scholarship and service. The Dean is responsible for communicating the vision and goals of the School to the College’s internal and external constituencies.

The Dean is expected to develop and administer the School’s resources to create excellent programs that prepare students to be responsible, productive, informed and reflective citizens, scholars, and creative leaders. The Dean is a member of the Provost’s leadership team, and is expected to work collaboratively with academic units across the campus to foster an interdisciplinary environment within the wider campus community. The Dean is expected to teach one class each academic year.

  • Develop and periodically update the strategic plan for the School, maintaining consistency with the goals and objectives of the College Strategic Plan.
  • Oversight of academic departments using a collaborative leadership style.
  • Collaborate with the Vice President for College Advancement to facilitate the development of external partnerships and cultivation of alumni relationships.
  • Administer the budget for the School.
  • Provide opportunities for and lead professional development activities.
  • Coordinate and manage facilities planning with the Vice President for Finance and Administration.
  • Manage the School’s human resources.

A terminal degree from an accredited institution in one of the disciplines in the School of Liberal Arts; a record of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service commensurate with appointment to full professor at SUNY Oneonta; tenurable in one of the departments in the School of Liberal Arts; a record of increased responsibilities in higher education administration; experience in academic planning, assessment of student learning, program development and review; experience in managing human and financial resources and facilities; a commitment to fostering a diverse faculty and staff; excellent communication, organizational, and presentation skills with proven ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, staff, and other administrators.
