The School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia is seeking a dynamic leader to be their first Chief Information
Officer (CIO). This new executive position is the result of a comprehensive review of IT needs and organization across the school. It
affords an exciting opportunity for a technical expert, business strategist, and visionary leader to create a strong information technology
foundation in support of a growing engineering school at one of the nation’s premier universities.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Finance and Operations, the CIO will provide leadership and vision for developing and implementing a
school-wide information technology program. Critical focus must be given to advancement of technology across education and research
missions, alignment of technologies with the school’s areas of research focus, and support for administrative operations. The incumbent will
work closely with Engineering School senior leadership, the faculty, and other stakeholders in the school and across grounds. The successful
candidate will build relationships with administrators, researchers, educators, and others within the Engineering School to ensure a
comprehensive and collaborative effort in delivering computing services.

The CIO establishes management standards and practices for computing support, application development and maintenance, project management,
business intelligence, security, networking, and IT equipment management. The incumbent will represent the school on University committees
and have the opportunity to take on leadership roles for University-wide initiatives. The CIO will also manage the budget and staff of the
Engineering School Information Technology Office.


The successful candidate will have the ability to work collaboratively as a leader in the development of new programs and policies, and to
provide creative solutions to complex problems. The ideal candidate will have strong planning, organization, and leadership skills, with the
ability to work independently while handling multiple projects. They will possess the ability to evaluate and apply information, and provide
advice to a range of constituents as well as make cost/benefit/risk trade-offs related to information technology requirements that advance
the educational and research missions. The ability to oversee the project management for minor investments up to large capital projects is
critical to success in this role. The incumbent should have knowledge of security and risk management practices and be able to analyze data
and complex information, and to draw inferences, conclusions and make recommendations based on data. They must also be able to build and
supervise a robust and diverse team of IT professionals.
