Chair of the Department of Communication

Frostburg State University’s Department of Communication is seeking talented applicants with proven leadership ability and evidence of
excellence in teaching and scholarship to fill a tenure-track chair position beginning the 2019-2020 academic year. The successful candidate
will be a departmental colleague who can provide effective leadership to the Communication Studies and Mass Communication programs. The
chair generally serves one or more three-year terms. Leadership includes the experience and fortitude to unify the department with blended
faculty positions, a student-centered curriculum, and oral competency initiatives. The candidate should be committed to diversity, inclusion
and civic engagement and have a record suitable for hiring at the rank of associate or full professor. Salary is competitive and
commensurate with experience and includes University System of Maryland benefits package.

With over 200 majors and anticipating continued growth and program expansion, the Communication Studies and Mass Communication programs as
well as FSU-TV3 reside in the state-of-the-art Gira Center for Communications and Information Technology. The facilities feature a
five-camera high definition television studio, which includes an Unreel Virtual Reality set, LED lighting grid, and industry standard audio
and video monitoring. The Gira Center also includes a 33-seat audio/video editing lab and 10 individual student editing bays. Experiential
learning activities extend beyond the faculty-student media productions to faculty-student led dialogue and deliberation activities through
a Communication Leadership Lab. The department leader should work effectively with course scheduling, advising, leveraging the television
and video studios, engaging students with the facilities, including the radio station, and appropriate community opportunities, managing the
department faculty and staff budget, enrollments, participating in Chair’s Council, and other duties as deemed appropriate.

regional university offering programs in the sciences, education, business, the arts and humanities at both the undergraduate and graduate

Catonsville Campus of the Community College of Baltimore County and at Arundel Mills Regional Higher Education Center, as well as online.

The successful candidate will have prior academic leadership experience, preferably as a department
chair for at least 3 years. The candidate will need to manage the fiscal, personnel, curriculum, program, outreach and recruitment, studio
and assessment responsibilities in a department of 9 full-time faculty and staff members. Teaching load will be three courses per semester.

Minimum Qualifications:
Earned Ph.D in Communication or closely related field. Earned tenure at an accredited college
or university or qualifications that would allow the candidate to be hired at the rank of associate or full professor. Credit toward tenure
will be considered. Significant leadership experience managing multiple communication programs. A scholarly/practical research agenda in
strategic communication and/or organizational leadership, media studies, and previous experience working in the media industry a plus.
