About the College
Curb college of Arts, Media, and Communication includes the departments of Art, Cinema and Television Arts, Communication Studies,
Journalism, Music, and Theatre with approximately 110 tenured/tenure-track faculty and over 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The
Mike Curb College is one of CSUN’s most publicly visible colleges, producing art exhibitions, theatrical productions, music performances,
speech and debate competitions, film screenings, and news programs. The College’s facilities include art galleries, theatres, screening
rooms, performance halls, and film and television studios as well as a vast array of student labs that range from theatrical costume shops
to virtual reality studios. The College is also home to many high impact educational practices including student-run, faculty-mentored
groups such as VISCOM (a creative agency), Agency 398 (public relations), The Sundial (journalism), and Five of Five (music and
entertainment label), as well as many impactful capstone experiences such as Senior Film Projects in Cinema and Television Arts and Senior
Recitals in Music. In addition, the college hosts the following centers, institutes, and community outreach initiatives: The Entertainment
Industry Institute, the Center for Visual Communication (VISCOM), The Music Therapy Wellness Clinic, Teenage Drama Workshop, Youth
Orchestra, and Communication for Youth.
The Associate Dean assists the Dean in carrying out
the mission of the college and serves as acting Dean in the Dean’s absence. The Associate Dean participates in regular meetings of the
Administrative Council, serves as Executive Secretary of the College Academic Council (the college’s curriculum body), and leads the
college’s Student Success Team. Under the direction of the Dean, the Associate Dean plays a leadership role in planning and carrying out
college student success initiatives, helping to ensure that the college meets student success goals, as well as participating in university
student success initiatives. The Associate Dean supervises the director of the college Student Resource Center/Educational Opportunities
Program (SRC/EOP) Satellite and the college’s Graduation/Retention specialist, and coordinates advising activities in concert with the
Director of the SRC/EOP and department chairs. The Associate Dean provides creative and effective leadership in curriculum development and
delivery; keeps departments informed of curricular deadlines; and provides assistance and advice as well as oversight of curricular resource
implications as proposals move through committees to final approval. In conjunction with the Manager of Academic Resources (MAR), the
Associate Dean carries out the Dean’s office review of the schedule of classes build to ensure that Full Time Equivalent Student (FTES)
projections match targets and instructional resources are used appropriately; monitors enrollment during the registration periods; assists
departments in making necessary adjustments; and actively responds to unexpected enrollment trends. The Associate Dean coordinates and
assists departments in program review and/or reaccreditation processes by consulting when needed in the preparation of self-studies, meeting
with outside evaluators, and participating in discussion and implementation of changes. The Associate Dean plays a leadership role in
overseeing college assessment activities so that they are productive and effective; serves as coordinator for student grievances, grade
appeals, disciplinary issues, and other student concerns, consulting with department chairs, faculty, and staff both inside and outside of
the college, as appropriate, to ensure fair and equitable outcomes; participates in outreach and recruitment activities on and off campus;
participates in strategic planning and implementation; serves as the college representative for the planning of Commencement exercises;
participates in college development and advancement efforts; and performs other duties as assigned.
Required qualifications include an earned graduate degree from an accredited institution in an
academic discipline appropriate to the college; tenured faculty member at the rank of associate professor or above; demonstrated excellence
in university-level teaching; demonstrated record of substantial scholarly, creative, and/or professional accomplishment; significant
experience in academic administration or faculty governance; demonstrated ability to serve effectively and collegially as a member of an
academic administrative team; demonstrated ability to lead teams and committees with collaborative leadership style; ability to effectively
manage multiple responsibilities and identify and solve organizational problems; excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent
interpersonal skills to deal discreetly and effectively with sensitive student, faculty, and staff issues; demonstrated ability to gather,
analyze, and use data in decision-making processes and ability to clearly explain the use of data in these processes; computer skills
relevant to academic administration and project management. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability and commitment to work
effectively with diverse populations and provide leadership in responding to and enriching the diverse and international profile of this
