Job Description

The University of Charleston
School of Pharmacy seeks candidates for our Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. The School of Pharmacy is an instrument of the University
of Charleston, designed to prepare pharmacists who will provide comprehensive patient care, advance the profession through research and
advocacy, and to serve the community as leaders in rural health care. The School fosters active participation of faculty, staff and students
in an agenda of community outreach, advocacy, and activism as one of the hallmarks of the pharmacy program. The University of Charleston’s
Pharmacy School offers a curriculum designed to develop pharmacy practitioners who are able to effectively communicate with diverse
populations and work as an integral member of the healthcare delivery team.

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs develops
policies and procedures affecting faculty and students related to the academic program and its offerings. He/She is responsible for three
essential areas:

  • Maintenance of a strong academic program in pharmacy that appropriately uses technology, contemporary teaching
    modalities, and fosters interprofessional education. Current academic programs offered in the School of Pharmacy are master of science
    degrees in the biologic and pharmaceutical sciences, doctor of pharmacy degree, and post-graduate pharmacy residency training.
  • Maintenance of academic records for annual progression, GPA reporting and graduation auditing, and developing and overseeing a program
    of faculty development. This includes, but not necessarily be limited to, teaching and learning.
  • Maintenance of a system of
    programmatic assessment. This system includes oversight to the School’s comprehensive assessment plan with particular attention to the
    review and quality of the overall curriculum, individual courses, and all other aspects of our academic offerings.

Specific duties of the Assistant/Associate Dean for Academic Affairs include:

  1. Participate in the Dean’s Executive
    Council.
  2. Serve as the administrative liaison to the Academic Affairs Committee.
  3. Develop and implement an organized program
    for faculty development that emphasizes the development of effective teaching skills and scholarly activity.
  4. Develop and implement,
    in cooperation with the Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice, Director and Assistant Director of Experiential Education an organized
    program for volunteer faculty development that emphasizes the development of effective mentoring and teaching skills.
  5. Initiate, in
    collaboration with departmental chairs, the academic schedule for the School.
  6. Prepare and administrate the budget for Academic
    Affairs.
  7. Coordinate in conjunction with department chairpersons the development and implementation of a portfolio system for
    faculty.
  8. Develop and implement a strategy for infusing technology into the learning environment.
  9. Serve on the School of
    Pharmacy’s Library Committee and work with the University’s Health Science Librarian to coordinate appropriate and cost effective
    educational resources for teaching, learning and scholarship.
  10. Work in conjunction with the Director of Residency program &
    residency committee to execute the teaching certificate requirements for post-graduate residency program
  11. Work in conjunction with
    the Assistant Dean for Assessment and Special Projects to implement a quality assurance program for the academic program of the School
  12. Work in conjunction with the Assistant Dean for Professional & Student Affairs the preparation of descriptions and revisions of
    teaching programs, curricula, course descriptions, and appropriate policies and procedures for the University Catalog and School of Pharmacy
    Student Handbook.
  13. Work in conjunction with the Assistant Dean for Professional & Student Affairs and the University Academic
    Support Center to develop, implement, and assess appropriate academic tutoring and other academic support options.
  14. Assist in the
    development and implementation of the School’s strategic plan to reflect the changes in health care, education and technology.
  15. Gather data and assist the Dean in the preparation of reports required by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, American
    Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and such other agencies as may be designated by the dean.
  16. Assist the Dean in the management of
    routine operations of the School including oversight of contractual agreements, development, expenditures of School of Pharmacy funds, and
    identification of entrepreneurial opportunities/activities.
  17. Act as an effective representative of the School of Pharmacy to
    professional and consumer groups, benefactors, and extramural funding sources.

Qualified candidates should have a strong
knowledge about accreditation requirements, assessment, understanding of the current and future trends in the practice of pharmacy, and
possess a doctorate degree in pharmacy, a pharmacy-related discipline, or other health science discipline. The candidate must have
sufficient accomplishments in teaching, research and service to meet at minimum the rank of Associate Professor. Previous administrative
experience is expected along with excellent managerial and interpersonal skills, and the willingness to work within a team environment. The
successful candidate is expected to teach within his/her area of expertise in the PharmD program (and as appropriate with our other academic
offerings) and contribute to the scholarship and service needs of the school. The position is full-time with faculty rank and salary
commensurate with skills and experience. The ADAA reports directly to the Dean of the School of Pharmacy and works collaboratively with the
members of the Executive Committee of the School of Pharmacy.

River. UC offers a professional education in a liberal arts setting to some 1300 undergraduate students and over 360 graduate students. The
School of Pharmacy was established in 2006 and currently is home to approximately 300 students with a class size of approximately 80
students.
