Position Purpose

The Multimedia Lab Technician monitors, maintains, installs and supports the computer hardware,
software, and peripherals in the Jones Media Center (JMC); develops and maintains the over-the-counter equipment loan program; manages,
hires, and trains student technical workers; and teaches workshops on hardware and software applicable to the development of multimedia
projects.

Required Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge of Macintosh computers and computer lab management tools
    and techniques. Comfortable using Windows computers.
  • Skilled in the use of consumer AV equipment.
  • Demonstrable skill
    in using multimedia software, such as Final Cut Pro, Logic, 3D modeling software, and/or applications in the Adobe Creative Cloud suite.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to set and modify work priorities independently with a high degree of initiative.
  • Demonstrable troubleshooting skills and the ability to recognize need for technical assistance.
  • Ability to work
    evening schedule as defined.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills and
    ability to facilitate group decision-making
  • A strong commitment to library public services is essential
  • At least 3
    years of increasingly responsible computer and/or AV support experience, preferably working in areas dealing with public services

  • Demonstrated writing and editing competency; technical writing experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree; or the equivalent in
    education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Apple Certified Mac Technician (ACMT), Adobe
    Certified Expert (ACE), or AV Certified Technology Specialist (CTS)
  • 3-5 years’ experience with desktop computer system imaging,
    using tools such as Symantec Ghost, JAMF Casper, or Apple’s DEP/MDM services.
  • Familiarity with scripting languages, such as
    Python, Ruby, or AppleScript, or scripting tools such as PowerShell.
  • In a highly automated and collaborative environment, has
    demonstrated experience determining user needs, selecting hardware and software to meet these needs, and training others in the use of new
    technologies.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.

Key
Accountabilities

  • Manages the loan of consumer-grade equipment for multimedia AV creation; including the processing and
    labeling of new equipment for inventory tracking and loans to patrons. Performs troubleshooting and ongoing maintenance of equipment,
    identifying needs for parts, repairs and replacements. 15%
  • Maintains computer hardware and software within the Jones Media
    Center, including regular re-imaging of computers in the JMC. Checks computer configurations and troubleshoots as necessary. 10%

  • Provides technical expertise, training, and advice to patrons of the JMC on computer and AV hardware and software within the Center. Advises
    on policies and creates training materials, including printed, digital, and online guides and instructions, for Center staff and library
    patrons on how to use JMC hardware and software. Works with the Media Learning Technologist to provide direct support to students and
    instructors working on course media projects. Facilitates one-on-one instruction and group workshops. 15%
  • Participates in direct
    patron services at the JMC circulation desk and provides general assistance to faculty and students; makes referrals to departmental
    colleagues, reference librarians, or other library staff when necessary and appropriate. 20%
  • Monitors physical security of
    assigned department assets; observes user activities and facility utilization shifts. Collects, compiles, analyzes, and presents reports for
    technical and administrative information, which may include facility usage and resource utilization. 5%
  • Manages the student
    technician workforce and is responsible for budgeting, recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating these students,
    in collaboration with the Learning Spaces Manager. Designs projects and training curriculum to improve the multimedia skills of student
    technicians. 10%
  • Maintains working knowledge of contemporary multimedia software for digital imaging, audio and video editing,
    3D modeling, presentations, and digital publishing. Stays abreast of developments and enhancements of computer hardware, AV equipment, and
    software that may impact our services and loan programs. Employs this knowledge to create screen and print content to promote JMC
    collections and services, and to make recommendations for new acquisitions to our program based on this knowledge. 15%

  • Participates on Dartmouth College Library committees, project teams, and task forces. 5%
  • Seeks opportunities to increase
    professional knowledge and skills by attending workshops, conferences, and training sessions. 5%
