Main Purpose of the Post
Applicants are invited for the position of Fixed Term Technology Transfer Research Fellow in the College of Engineering to work at a new Steel Innovation Centre to be hosted by Swansea University in partnership with the businesses of Tata Steel UK and the broader steel supply chains across the UK.
The shared vision is the creation of an open access UK Steel Engineering and Innovation Technology Centre for the steel supply chain. This is a once in a generation opportunity to establish an industry driven Centre that will deliver a globally competitive and innovation focused, 21st Century UK Steel Industry. The Centre will realise its ambitions by:
- Providing research excellence capacity and capabilities in materials processing and characterization; process & product innovation; energy efficiency & environmental sustainability; supporting the circular economy; and data science management
- Co-locating multi-disciplined researchers and industry technologists who will work collaboratively to drive process efficiencies & develop and implement disruptive technologies, alongside high value products.
- Be located on the door step of the largest strip steel plant in the UK, enabling the free flow of ideas into, and out of the plant with a view to increasing innovation implementation and exploitation.
You will join a new team of high calibre researchers, technologists and industrial experts who aim to transform the UK steel industry into a global leader in low carbon iron and steelmaking with particular specialisms in novel materials development, late stage product diversification, value adding coatings technology and novel construction materials for creating active building facades.
This post will specifically involve engagement in the creation of the Steel Innovation Centre during the initial transition phase and subsequently in the creation of new bespoke facilities planned for the Bay Campus. The role encompasses knowledge transfer and research activities related to the needs of the UK Steel sector.
