Free open Job in Wales Bioinformatician at Cardiff University

Cardiff University – College of Biomedical and Life Sciences, School of Medicine

Division of Infection and Immunity

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team developing analytical approaches for lipidomics data sets generated by mass spectrometry. This position is fixed term until 31/01/2019 and is funded by a grant from the European Research Council.

Our research aims to identify new lipids (fats) involved in cardiovascular disease and dementia. We do this using new generation high resolution mass spectrometry approaches.  These experiments generate large datasets and robust analytical tools for analysis of these files are currently lacking. Through a collaboration with colleagues in the School of Computer Science and Informatics, software solutions have been generated, but significant ongoing programming work remains to be done to refine and adapt these for both current and future research projects.

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Bioinformatician with experience in current operating systems (may include: Windows, OSX, UNIX/Linux), Perl (or Python) scripting, experience of cross platform development and scripting familiarity with biological/bioinformatic databases, the use of R, databasing and in the manipulation and analysis of large biological datasets from different sources and in different formats. You will also have an interest in learning about the biological aspects of the project including the role of lipids in health and disease, and the acquisition of the data using mass spectrometry. You will have supervisory responsibility for PhD students and other staff members, and also be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
