Students Lead Road Safety Campaign at British International School Abu Dhabi:
Abu Dhabi, UAE: The British International School Abu Dhabi student community are leading a campaign to raise road safety awareness within the school.
This term, students at The British International School Abu Dhabi (BIS Abu Dhabi) areleading a Road Safety Awareness campaign under the slogan ‘Seatbelts Are For Everyone’ (SAFE). Students across the whole school are taking part in a series of road safety activities and lessons with a focus on using seatbelts for all journeys.
Patrick O’Neill, Assistant Headteacher for Student Well being, says “the aim of the SAFE campaign at BIS is to raise awareness of improving road safety and especially, in trying to ensure that all the children who attend our school wear seatbelts when they are in their cars.”
Local Community Police Officers visited BIS Abu Dhabi inmid-April to meet students and held assemblies on road safety, as well as running a session with the PTA to look at how they can help to raise awareness too. Various events will be held throughout the term to promote the wearing of seatbelts, including having seatbelt ‘officers’ in the car park.
Early Years and Primary students have been assigned seatbelt cards which need to be signed by a parent or bus monitor each day to confirm that they have worn a seatbelt.
Students and parents have been asked to complete a survey around their road usage in the UAE. The survey has had an overwhelming response and data is currently being compiled for Primary students to analyse.
Other initiatives include a competition under the ‘Seatbelts Are For Everyone’ slogan, asking students to create a car sticker and t-shirt design to help remind road users of the importance of seatbelts when travelling on the roads.
Babyshopran a session for parents focusing on correct car seat fitting.
T-shirts, banner signage and posters around the school are driving the message within the school community and beyond.
