FTE: 1.0
Term: Open Contract
Closing date: 12/05/2019

The University of Strathclyde is a leading international technological university which is recognised for its world class research, knowledge exchange, and educational programmes. The Department of Computer & Information Sciences, based within the Faculty of Science, is an internationally recognised research department specialising in health informatics, interactive systems, computer security, information science and theoretical computer science. The Department is home to around 650 undergraduate, taught postgraduate and PhD students. We have a strong commitment to widening access and inclusion while maintaining academic quality and an outstanding student experience.

The Department, in partnership with key stakeholders, has developed a Graduate Apprenticeship degree in IT: Software Development (GA ITSD) which began in September 2018. This 4 year degree programme is designed for learners employed full time within a software development role in industry, and consequently, a significant proportion of the indicative student workload will be credit-bearing work-based learning. The ITSD programme is mostly delivered online but with regular on-campus activities.

The Department seeks to appoint a Teaching Associate in Software Engineering/Computer Science to: develop and deliver some of the ITSD modules and undertake student assessment activities; work with the Programme Director to ensure the smooth running of the programme; develop and engage in scholarship, professional and knowledge exchange activities including continuing professional development (CPD); carry out administrative tasks assigned by the Head of Department.

The successful applicant will have primary interests and expertise in software development. The appointee will be expected to design and develop course materials with guidance from other colleagues, and also teach on the ITSD degree. The ability to teach programming in some of the programming languages taught on this course (e.g. Java, Python, C, PhP, JavaScript, SQL) is essential. Knowledge of current practices/frameworks/tools used as part of software development within industry is desirable. The appointee will also be expected to develop an understanding of good pedagogic practice with regard to online teaching.

Candidates will normally be expected to have a good Honours degree and PhD in a relevant area or equivalent professional experience to enable them to contribute to the delivery of the ITSD programme teaching and provide student support. Candidates will be expected to develop their knowledge of appropriate teaching methods and work towards eligibility for membership of the Higher Education Academy. Applicants who are seeking a part-time position will also be considered.

Formal interviews for this post will be held on 22/05/2019.

Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to Dr Alexandra Coddington, ITSD Programme Director (, 0141 548 4521).
