NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Health in Situations of Fragility
The Institute for Global Health and Development is a multi-disciplinary centre for postgraduate education and research addressing contemporary health and development challenges in low and middle income countries. Staff of the Institute currently hold research funding in excess of £6 million. We structure initiatives within research clusters that maximise synergies between the work of staff and secure world-leading profile and contribution. Currently, our clusters are focused on work on health systems, particularly in fragile and low-income settings, and studies on the themes of psychosocial well-being, protection and integration amongst refugees and other displaced populations.
With a major award from the National Institute for Health Research we are establishing a UK-centre for research on health in situations of fragility which draws on the core expertise of our clusters. Our research will seek to identify sources of resilience within formal health systems and local community processes to facilitate effective provision for health priorities – particularly mental health and non-communicable disease (NCDs) – in situations of fragility. Researchers at QMU, Edinburgh will work closely with our collaborative partners the Global Health Initiative, American University Beirut (AUB), Lebanon and the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS), Freetown, Sierra Leone.
This post will join the unit in the early stages of its work and have significant opportunity to shape its agenda and approach. We are seeking candidates with relevant expertise and qualification (having completed – or being close to completion – of doctoral studies in a relevant field of global health and development) to join our team of senior researchers and research fellows from September 2017.
This research was funded by the NIHR Global Health Research Programme 16/136/100
