Southern Ocean diatoms and climate change: quantifying the relative roles of diversity and plasticity in evolution.
The Southern Ocean is one of the most productive regions on the planet, yet very little is known about the population structure, gene flow, and functional diversity of the microbes that form the basis of this ecosystem. We are offering a postdoctoral project as part of an ongoing NSF-NERC funded project examining the relative roles of genetic diversity and individual plasticity in adaptive evolution in populations of Southern Ocean diatoms. The successful applicant will work with diatoms isolated during a recent Southern Ocean cruise, and will carry out laboratory microbial evolution experiments investigating the roles of individual plasticity and genetic diversity in phenotypic evolution in response to warming. The PDRA will work primarily with Sinead Collins at the UoE, but is required to travel to the University of Rhode Island for short visit(s) to ensure coordinated methods between the Collins and Rynearson experiments.
Applicants must have, or shortly obtain, a PhD in experimental evolutionary biology, marine microbiology, microbial physiology, microbial community ecology, or other suitable discipline. Laboratory experience including culturing microbes, as well as demonstrated experience with large and logistically challenging experiments, including their planning and analysis, is required. Familiarity with basic phytoplankton physiology methods or diatom biology is useful, but not vital. This post is part of an international project; the successful applicant will have excellent communication skills and the demonstrated the ability to work as part of a team.
This post is for a position on a joint project to Sinead Collins (UoE) and Tatiana Rynearson (University of Rhode Island).
The start date is negotiable; latest start date is April 1, 2018 and is for 27 months
Closing Date: 05 January 2018 at 5pm GMT
