Job offer available in Scotland Post-doctoral Research Associate in Atmospheric Monitoring at The University of Edinburgh

This role is a collaboration between the University of Edinburgh and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in London. The postdoctoral scientist will be based at NPL in London for the duration of the project and drive the delivery of new in situ isotopic measurements of methane for helping to understand fluxes on large scales (regional to global). Alongside this primary aim, the scientist will also work on other novel research projects to advance isotopic measurements and manage collaborations with other universities for measurements of greenhouse gases in the UK. Methane is an important greenhouse gas and mitigation of emissions is critical for addressing climate change, however, our understanding of fluxes remains very poor. This position will be a great opportunity to make a significant impact in this field of study, contributing towards fundamental improvements in atmospheric monitoring.

The candidate will have responsibility for developing and deploying new instrumentation to an atmospheric monitoring site, and translating measurement results into new scientific findings. As part of a large UK consortium project the potential exists to be involved in other areas of measurement science towards the aims of estimating ‘top-down’ greenhouse gas emissions.

Candidates should have a PhD in atmospheric science or a relevant area of physics or engineering, preferably working with instrumentation for measurement of volatile gases. Experience in laser spectroscopy and/or gas chromatography mass spectrometry for atmospheric monitoring purposes would be advantageous.

This post is available immediately and is fixed term to 31st March 2023.

The School aims to ensure equality of opportunity and holds an Athena SWAN Silver award. We welcome applications from everyone irrespective of gender or ethnic group. Appointment will be based on merit alone.
