Job offer available in Scotland Academic Programme Manager for the Centre for Doctoral Training in Applied Photonics at Heriot-Watt University

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Applied Photonics ( is recruiting a part-time Academic Programme Manager to facilitate the academic and professional-skills training programme. Established in 2001, the CDT is the UK’s longest running centre of doctoral training in photonics systems. Comprising around one hundred academic research groups in five universities, we work with industry to deliver solutions to critical scientific and engineering problems and provide advanced technical and business training to future industrial research leaders.

The CDT Academic Programme Manager will ideally have a background in tertiary education and be responsible for designing and coordinating the overall CDT student training experience. The post-holder will manage the implementation and development of the training programme, together with operational aspects of admission and progression, liaising with and providing leadership to the partner universities (formal taught courses) and third-party training providers (skills workshops) to develop the CDT training programme in a way that delivers the highest quality student experience and the best fit to the skills required by students to most effectively prosecute their industrial research projects.

The successful applicant will work using their own initiative as well as within and leading a team, and will have excellent written and presentation skills, matched by organisational and communication abilities of an equally high standard.

The role-holder is responsible for the planning and coordination of the CDT training programme and of the international summer school, requiring the formulation and communication of clear strategic objectives and building internal and external networks for this purpose. The Academic Manager will work closely with the CDT executive team and the academic and industrial partners.

The CDT Academic Programme Manager position is a part-time role, occupying 2.5 days/week, or 50% FTE. Flexibility in working patterns may be needed in order to accommodate events taking place outside non-standard working hours, such as occasional weekend workshops and the biennial summer school. Time off in lieu will be offered in recognition of any requirement for extended working hours needed to facilitate special events. Occasional UK travel may be required.

You will have a PhD in a physics related area or an equivalent level of knowledge and experience gained in an industrial or research context, together with an understanding of the photonics industry and its requirements, and experience of UK HE Sector, particularly the doctoral and postdoctoral training environment.
