The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF), a £1.5 billion fund by the UK Government to support cutting-edge research that addresses the challenges faced by developing countries, has funded ‘Teleconnected SARgassum risks across the Atlantic: building capacity for TRansformational Adaptation in the Caribbean and West Africa (SARTRAC)’. SARTRAC is investigating the impacts of and responses to the massive sargassum seaweed invasion of Caribbean and West African coasts since 2011, especially the impacts on and opportunities for the poorest in sargassum affected societies. SARTRAC comprises four (4) universities located in four (4) countries (Jamaica, Barbados, Ghana and UK). We have an exciting opportunity for one full time, OR two part-time researchers to join our team.

The University of Southampton seeks one individual (or two people in a job share) for 31 months with skills in: (i) social science, human geography or political science in the areas of regional environmental governance, environment and development, community based adaptation and/or (ii) application GIS and remote sensing in environmental monitoring.

We seek candidates with quantitative (modelling seaweed distributions) and/or qualitative skills (ethnographic fieldwork, interview techniques, Delphi analysis) to design and carry out desk-based and field-based research in Jamaica and the Eastern Caribbean, and engage in knowledge transfer activities in Ghana. They should have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualification in Geography, Environmental social science, Political science or other relevant subject. The successful candidate(s) will work closely with Southampton researchers, undertake primary research, write research papers, and liaise with Caribbean and African researchers in areas including: geography, politics, biology, and oceanography.

This post is for one (1) full time member of staff. However, if you have the skills to do either the social science or the GIS and remote sensing but not both, we would encourage you to apply for a job share position in your area of specialisation (i.e. GIS or social science). This would be a 50% part time post at 50% of the salary for the project duration.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
