An opportunity exists for a significant role in policy development in a unique British overseas territory—the Falkland Islands: 

The Package

Salary: up to c£70k (inclusive of 25% annual gratuity, subject to satisfactory performance). Starting salary will depend on qualifications and experience.

Other Benefits: A favourable tax regime, a relocation allowance on appointment, return flights package and 41 days’ annual leave (inclusive of public holidays).

Contract Type: Fixed term appointment—12 months. Secondment /career break opportunities will also be considered.

The Position 

This is a new post intended to provide support and legal advice to a variety of Directorates within the Falkland Islands Government (FIG) in relation to public policy development. There is a pressing need for public policy development to underpin new legislation; in particular in connection with the prospect of hydrocarbon development. Your main duties would include: 

  • Working closely with colleagues across FIG to provide expert advice, including legal advice; to facilitate the development of Government policy on a wide range of subjects
  • Providing advice and guidance in any matter requiring a change in the law (primary and secondary legislation); in particular to provide support for the development of high quality legislative drafting instructions
  • Planning and conducting research and analysis in support of new policy development, which would include complex or novel legal questions 

The Person 

To apply, you must be a solicitor or barrister (admitted UK/Ireland/Commonwealth) with ideally five years’ post-qualification experience, and with ideally 5 years successful public sector policy experience. You must be an effective and responsible team member with the skills and motivation needed to develop a new role in a new working environment.
