The Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow in Soft Robotics and Haptics. The position is available from 1st March 2019 and funded for two years in the first instance.
The post holder will be required to carry out research in the laboratory of Dr Helge Wurdemann at UCL in the area of surgical robotics. The Research Fellow will design, model, fabricate and validate a soft, stiffness-controllable haptic feedback actuator which will be integrated into the da Vinci Research Kit.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at UCL has an outstanding international reputation in research on energy and the environment, marine engineering and naval architecture and engineering for medical applications, with strong research collaborations with industry and universities in the UK, North America, Asia and the Far East and has excellent research and teaching facilities.
The successful candidate must have a good first degree (2:1 UK equivalent or above), a PhD in electrical/mechanical engineering, computer science or robotics and have sufficient experience in soft robotics and/or haptics to demonstrate that they have generated and executed independent and collaborative research at an internationally-leading level. Candidates must have a good track record of recently and continuously publishing their work in research journals and undertaken some supervisory roles in a research laboratory.
Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary £30,992 – £32,607 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
