You will deliver teaching to Birkbeck students (mainly BA students in Classics and Classical Studies and MA students in Classical Civilisation), in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully and to undertake scholarship to maintain knowledge of the appropriate subject area(s) within the oversight of Research & Teaching Colleagues. You will undertake all related course administrative duties as required.
Your main responsibility will be preparation, teaching, administration and assessment of the following language modules: Intermediate Latin. You will deliver teaching to undergraduates in order to enable them to successfully complete their studies successfully in this field, and undertake all related course administrative duties as required.
The modules aim to develop knowledge and understanding of Latin at different levels.
The Intermediate Latin module is a study of Latin language for students who have completed the Introduction to Latin module or an equivalent (Latin to GCSE standard). The module aims to develop students’ knowledge of Latin grammar and widen their vocabulary, enabling them to master regular syntactical constructions and read standard Latin texts. By the end of the module, students should be able to understand all syntactical constructions covered in these units and demonstrate their ability by translating from Latin into English and from English into Latin. In addition to the course book work, students will study a short unadapted text and practise reading and translating Latin texts at sight.
You will be expected to be familiar with a variety of teaching methods: language teaching, managing group discussions in a seminar setting, setting examinations and other forms of assessment, marking students’ written work and examination scripts.
Each course meets for 2 hours once a week, 6.00-8.00pm over the Autumn, Spring and Summer Terms (24 weeks in total) commencing Monday 1st October, 2018. Teaching duties include delivering a two-hour class, once a week, plus student consultation time as required.
Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £58.53 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
