Job offer in Ireland Lecturer in Microbiology at Queen’s University Belfast

The School of Biological Sciences is part of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences. 

It is made up of three research disciplines, including Ecosystems Biology & Sustainability, Food Safety & Nutrition, and Microbes & Pathogen Biology.

Most staff within the School are also members of the Institute for Global Food Security GRI: the Institute is ranked No 1 in the UK for research intensity in Agriculture, Veterinary and Food Sciences (REF 2014). 

The School aims to enhance the way we use technology in research, food security, microbiology, ecosystem biology, sustainability and many other related areas. 

The School prides itself on providing innovative teaching methods and a high-tech learning environment for our students. 

Applications are invited for a permanent lectureship within the discipline of Microbiology in the School. 

Applicants should be able to demonstrate strengths in the broad discipline of microbiology: Candidates with expertise in the areas of bacteriophage biology, bioinformatics, microbial ecology and/or metagenomics/metatranscriptomics are particularly welcome. 

The post is available immediately to develop and participate in research that will complement the on-going activities of the School’s Microbes & Pathogen Biology, and/or Ecosystem Biology and Sustainability research themes, and also align to one of the University’s Global Research Institutes (GRI) or Pioneer Research Programmes.  Additionally, applicants should have a strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate education and a willingness to engage in the broader administration and management of taught degree programmes.

The successful Lecturer will have: 

  • BSc in Microbiology or related discipline.
  • PhD in Microbiology or related discipline.
  • Proven research experience in either bacteriophage biology, bioinformatics, microbial ecology, microbial biochemistry and/or metagenomics/metatranscriptomics in areas which complement the research priorities of the School’s disciplinary groupings and the Institute for Global Food Security.
  • Relevant teaching experience at University level

Salary scale: £36,261 – £39,610 per annum (potential to progress to £43,266 per annum through sustained exceptional contribution)
