Job offer in Ireland Biomedical Engineer at National University of Ireland, Galway
Industry Co-Development of Cardiovascular Device
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a Biomedical Engineer with CÚRAM at the National University of Ireland, Galway.
This position is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and Boston Scientific.
The position is available from August 1st 2019 to contract end date of December 31, 2020
The successful candidate will work with Ms Niamh Hynes, an experienced Vascular Surgeon, Professor Abhay Pandit, our Industry Programme Team and other colleagues from CÚRAM to develop a prototype of a large bore femoral closure device. This device will be used as access for endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR), and transcatheter aortic valve repair (TAVR). Access for these life-saving procedures was initially achieved by surgical cut down of one or both groins, but with the growing need for minimal invasiveness, endovascular large-bore femoral closure devices (LBFCD) which allow for percutaneous access have emerged as an alternative to surgical cutdown. LBFCDs have the potential to reduce the need for surgical wounds, duration of surgery, the risk of wound complications, and the hospital length of stay, and thereby improve patient satisfaction. However, early studies have identified shortcomings with current devices, including a long learning curve for physicians; many exclusion criteria such as calcified arteries and morbid obesity and device failures that render them unreliable and inconsistent. This project offers an exciting potential to develop a LBFCD device that overcomes the limitations of currently available devices within a unique multi-disciplinary specialist environment that provides direct access to clinical expertise, industry prowess and biomedical and scientific excellence.
Salary: €35,000 to €48,000 fixed per annum
Applications to include a covering letter, CV, and the contact details of three referees should be sent, via e-mail (in word or PDF only) to Niamh Hynes: Niamh.Hynes@hse.ie
