The Genomics Core Technology Unit (GCTU) sits within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences at Queen’s University Belfast and aims to enhance research by providing access to the latest genomics technology.

A significant investment in state-of-the-art equipment enables us the Unit to support a range of genomics applications, with a particular focus on Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS). The Unit provides an increasing range of off-the shelf NGS services and will also works with research teams to develop bespoke projects that exploit the power of NGS applications to enhance research outputs.

The GCTU is a not-for-profit service provider for the research community and is equipped with state-of-the-art next generation sequencing platforms. Coupled with complementary robotics, sequence capture and array capabilities, the Unit offers optimum, tailor-made solutions across a wide range of biological applications.

We are recruiting for a Bio-Information Technician who will be based in the Genomics Core Technology Unit. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Genomics and Informatics CTU Managers to support a range of projects within the Units. The successful candidate will develop, validate and maintain analytical tools, data analysis pipelines and algorithms to analyse data generated from Next Generation sequencing and associated workflows using the Illumina platforms, suitable for service delivery.  The post will also require correlating biological findings with biological outcomes and integration with other datasets such as expression profiling.

The Technician will also develop pipelines for the processing and analysis of raw data from Next Generation Sequencing, and any new platforms brought into the unit (There is a specific focus on RNA, exome, whole genome and single cell sequencing)

This post is available for 12 months.

The successful candidate must have:

  • A degree in biomedical sciences, statistics, computer science, or related subject
  • Three years relevant research experience in genomics managing and analysing NGS data and other big data (must include RNA Seq and DNA seq workflows)
  • Proven experience of working with Illumina Platforms
  • Relevant work experience working in a quality controlled environment
  • Experience of working with Linux/UNIX environments.
  • Proven experience with suitable analysis and plotting languages, particularly R or Matlab.

Salary scale: £27,831 – £32,236 per annum (potential to progress to £35,210 per annum through sustained exceptional contribution
