A vacancy has arisen for a UNIX/HPC Engineer to work within PHE’s Emergency Response Department (ERD) at Porton Down near Salisbury. This post provides an excellent opportunity to work as part of an integrated multidisciplinary team in a focused and friendly environment. Working in a small team you will be responsible for the management, support and maintenance of the hardware and software components of mission critical UNIX/High Performance Computing (HPC) systems required for the execution of ERD activities contributing to PHE business.

We are looking for a proactive team player who can apply the latest technologies in Scientific and High Performance Computing to maintain and improve the department’s specialist computing systems. You will ensure that the department’s Linux-based systems are fully maintained and managed to provide authorized users with optimum levels of access to data and applications as and when required, in order effectively to conduct PHE business.

Good written and verbal communication skills are a must, as well as an enthusiasm to learn new skills and a proven record of delivering complex projects on time. You will be educated to post graduate level in Computer Science, or other closely-related discipline, or have work experience to an equivalent level. Experience of managing Linux-based computer clusters will ensure that you can meet our challenges using a broad range of technologies including Linux virtualization platforms, Apache Web server, LDAP/Kerberos, Networking including InfiniBand and Cloud technologies (e.g. Openstack, AWS).

Appointment to this post is on PHE terms and conditions of service. Only previous continuous service in the Civil Service is recognised for contractual purposes.
