Open-ended appointment, 37 hours per week

The Institute of Railway Research (IRR) is looking for professional engineers with an eye to the future. Whether it is helping to solve the engineering challenges of today’s railway or conducting research to shape the future of the industry, you will enjoy a variety of technical challenges.

The IRR provides specialist railway research and development across a wide range of engineering and safety-risk based areas. We work with industrial and academic research partners across Europe on a variety of projects which will influence the future development of rail transport.

Our research programme requires high calibre engineers with a wide range of skills. However, we are particularly interested in applicants with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Applied mathematical modelling and simulation of mechanical / dynamic systems
  • Rail vehicle dynamics and vehicle-track interaction
  • Engineering data analysis
  • Traction / brake system modelling
  • Control system simulation / development
  • Testing and instrumentation

Whilst experience in the railway industry is desirable, your experience may have been gained in a range of related areas including automotive and aerospace engineering.

Successful applicants will initially support research projects carried out under the University’s strategic partnership with RSSB, with opportunities to work in other areas including the UKKRIN Centre of Excellence in Rolling Stock being possible in future.

To take advantage of this opportunity you will need to have a strong academic track record together with excellent technical skills and an enthusiasm for new challenges. You will also need to be a specialist in a relevant engineering discipline and have the professional credibility and vision to produce world class research.
