Job offer in england Senior Research Associate at University of Bristol

University of Bristol – School of Earth Sciences

Applications are sought for a research position to work on a project entitled “Isotopic records of solar nebula evolution and controls on planetary compositions”. The post is funded until 30th June 2019 on an ERC grant (Isoneb), to work with Tim Elliott and Chris Coath in the School of Earth Sciences, University of Bristol.

The position will develop a laser ablation approach to make mass-independent isotopic analyses of the matrices of primitive meteorites using the one-of-a-kind Proteus collision-cell, multi-collector, inductively coupled plasma mass-spectrometer. This novel mass-spectrometer, developed in collaboration with Thermo Fisher Bremen in an earlier phase of this project, offers unique opportunities for isotope analysis. Specifically, this position will make the most of the capabilities of Proteus for trying to find pre-solar grains in situ.

This will require coupling laser ablation with collision cell reactions,multi-collection on multiple secondary electron multipliers, handling large, time-resolved datasets and registering isotope data with spatial positions. Expertise with some of these procedures is highly desirable and sufficient skill and enthusiasm to develop the others is essential. The applicant will also need to interpret the data in the context of stellar contributions to the solar system and how different isotopic carriers are processed in the early solar system. Thus some knowledge of nucleosynthesis and nebular processes would be helpful.

Applications close on 25 September 2017. We hope to interview and appoint as soon as possible after that.

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
