Job offer in england Research Fellow in Physics/Engineering at Northumbria University
Northumbria University – Faculty of Engineering and Environment
|Location:||Newcastle Upon Tyne|
Fixed term for 18 months
Applications are invited for an EPSRC-supported postdoctoral research position in the area of Physics and engineering. The successful candidate is to be employed by Northumbria University to work as a researcher on the EPSRC funded project (EP/P026613/1) “Self-Propelled Droplet Motion on Gradient Slippery Liquid Infused Porous Surfaces (G-SLIPS). You will work with Dr Gary George Wells in the Smart Materials and Surfaces Laboratory.
When dealing with liquids on a microscale, the ratio of a droplet’s surface area to its volume becomes ever larger which increases any frictional forces during motion. To induce motion in droplets on a surface, static frictional forces due to contact angle hysteresis, must also be overcome. This project will create surfaces with low contact angle hysteresis and low friction capable of imparting motion onto droplets without the need for any pumping mechanism. It will use gradients in the roughness of an underlying surface texture, along with an infused liquid lubricant to create a Gradient Slippery Liquid Infused Porous Surface (G-SLIPS). It will use this variation of a SLIP surface and results to perform a full study into the mechanisms of motion on such surfaces. It will experimentally examine how parameters such as the type of lubricating liquid or the underlying surface topography create and control droplet motion. Finally, it will create and test specific surfaces capable of prescribed motion commensurate with specific microfluidic tasks.
The ideal candidate will be an experimental physicist, with a good knowledge of liquid-solid interactions and the production of structured surfaces. It will be expected the successful candidate can carry out independent research and produce high-quality publications.
