Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to work with Dr Kate Howland on the EPSRC-funded Conversational Programming for Smart Environments (CONVER-SE) project. The research will investigate how end-users understand and describe smart environment behaviours whilst in situ, and use the findings to develop intuitive programming tools that mitigate the challenges of using speech for programming.
The project seeks to build a better understanding of natural descriptions of smart environment behaviours through contextual studies. The study data will be used to design and develop prototype conversational interfaces, which will then be evaluated in situ. The findings will contribute to new programming paradigms that have the power to unlock engagement with computation in smart environments for a wide range of people and organisations.
The Research Fellow will be responsible for carrying out contextual interviews and studies, and designing and prototyping a ‘wizard of oz’ conversational interface that allows evaluation of different approaches based on the empirical data.
The successful candidate will be have a background in human-computer interaction research, with experience in carrying out interviews, analysing data using qualitative and quantitative methods, and designing, implementing and evaluating high-fidelity prototypes. Programming skills in a high-level object-oriented language such as Java are required, as well as the ability to learn to use new hardware and software platforms. An emerging track-record of research relating to novice or end-user programming and/or smart environments is desirable.
For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Kate Howland: firstname.lastname@example.org
