A postdoctoral Research Associate position is available for an outstanding individual as part of a NERC-ESRC-DFID funded project that seeks to design improved weather index-based insurance schemes to enhance the resilience of smallholder farmers in developing countries to financial risks posed by extreme weather and climate change.

As part of this project, you will be responsible for developing approaches to use combinations of crop models, satellite remote sensing, and in-situ imagery to help improve field-level crop yield estimation in India.

The project is in collaboration with researchers from the International Food Policy Research Institute in the United States and HDFC-ERGO General Insurance, one of India’s largest crop insurance providers. Working with these partners, you will assess the ability of alternative datasets and models to improve the reliability of yield monitoring, and evaluate benefits for farmers and insurance providers in India.

You will have a PhD (or comparable professional experience) in Agricultural Science or Engineering, Remote Sensing, Data Science, or a related discipline, demonstrated experience of applying models and/or data analytics to agricultural systems, a developing publication track record, and strong written and oral communication skills.

You will be based in the Water Resources Section of the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at the University of Manchester. You will join a dynamic and growing group of researchers and students working on the assessment and management of water and climate-related risks for agriculture, including links to the energy sector and ecosystem conservation (
