Research England is being established as a new council within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). Research England’s aim will be to create and sustain the conditions for a healthy and dynamic research and knowledge exchange system in English universities. This includes providing grant funding to English universities for research and knowledge exchange activities and infrastructure (over £1.9 billion in 2017-18); developing and implementing the Research Excellence Framework in partnership with the funding bodies in the devolved nations; overseeing the sustainability of the Higher Education research base in England; and overseeing the £900 million UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF); and the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF).
About the role
The Institution Engagement Manager will collaborate with colleagues across Research England to develop and implement an institutional engagement strategy, which encompasses both engaging with higher education institutions across England and the development of Research England’s insight and knowledge of institutions and cross-sector trends.
This role will involve engaging with English higher education providers, at all levels including the most senior levels, to build intelligence and understanding of their strategy, behaviour, capability and capacity in relation to their research and knowledge exchange. This will involve building strong trust-based relationships with senior stakeholders in institutions, visiting institutions to discuss their research and knowledge exchange strategies, promoting funding opportunities and advising colleagues across UK Research and Innovation to help inform policy development and delivery.
Responsibilities of this post will include:
- As part of a small team of Institution Engagement Managers covering different institutions, you will develop and implement Research England’s institutional engagement strategy to enhance understanding of institution-level research and knowledge exchange, and to identify common issues and opportunities in line with Research England priorities
- Define and develop process, policies and protocols to systematically capture insights and intelligence that might inform institutional engagement and policy delivery, in consultation with colleagues across the organisation
- Proactively undertake regular horizon scanning with colleagues internally and key external stakeholders to anticipate potential issues and opportunities for insight and engagement ensuring the best outcome for Research England.
You will have a successful track record in building effective relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
You must have a strong understanding of the higher education environment, including knowledge of the funding and management of higher education institutions.
You will have strong organisational skills with the ability to develop plans and deploy resources effectively and have experience of working effectively to deliver your own tasks, to contribute to the success of other teams and contributing to corporate goals.
You will have an understanding of a policy organisation and an interest and understanding of research and knowledge exchange policy.
Experience of organisation change and of working in the University sector would also be desirable.
