Applications are invited for a full-time, fixed-term position (two years) as Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Professional Writing (Science and Technology) within the School of English and Media Studies. The level of appointment will depend on qualifications and experience, but the school is seeking an appointee who can take a leadership role in the area of Academic Writing in the Sciences, and who can supervise the work of the tutorial staff who teach and conduct workshops in the programme. The preferred start date for the appointment is July 2017.

The school welcomes applicants who have expertise in professional writing studies (science and technology), rhetoric and composition, ESP/EAP, WAC/WID and/or writing pedagogy from related disciplines, such as English, Applied Linguistics or Education. Secondary areas of expertise are open; candidates are encouraged to look at the school’s full range of programmes and consider possible areas of synergy and cross-disciplinary co-operation.

This position will be based on the Manawatu campus in Palmerston North, but the appointee will also have responsibility for the oversight and coordination of courses taught on both the Manawatu and Auckland campuses, as well as extensive enrolments in distance mode. The position involves primary responsibility for a substantial first-year undergraduate science writing course for Bachelor of Science students, as well as contributing to the teaching and future development of writing studies and/or one of the other programmes within the school at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The appointee will have a completed PhD at the time of application. University teaching experience, academic publications and other evidence of ongoing research activity will be expected.

The School of English and Media Studies is established on Massey University’s three campuses in Palmerston North, Auckland and Wellington. It has a strong record in teaching excellence and pastoral care in an interactive learning environment. Courses are taught in internal and distance learning modes (including online delivery), at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The school currently offers programmes in English, Media Studies, Creative Writing, Expressive Arts, Public and Professional Writing, and Theatre Studies.
