About the opportunity
The Innovation in Applied Design Lab (IAD Lab) is a collaborative cross-disciplinary research laboratory at the University of Sydney’s School of Architecture, Design, and Planning. The Lab operates at the forefront of applied research, bridging academic and industry domains, and is broadly cast to examine a range of built environment topics.
The IAD Lab is expanding its capacity in the area of Industrialised Building and is seeking applicants with a demonstrated world-class track record in that area to augment our current academic and research team. Specifically, we are seeking a successful researcher to strengthen our capacity in the broader fields that encompass industrialised building, and researchers who have an interest in working between industry and the university.
The IAD Lab operates across a broad range of fields and subject areas, including:
- Architectural design
- Environmentally sustainable design
- Building Construction
- Building Technology
- Computational Design
- Digital and Automated Fabrication
- Construction/Project Management
- Industrial design
- Advanced Manufacturing
The IAD Lab currently conducts a number of projects on industrialised building and the chosen candidate will be expected to work together with these existing projects and researchers. The responsibilities of the role include:
- Attracting and supervising higher degree research students
- Undertaking research on existing and new projects
- Building research collaborations with industry
- Making applications for research funding
- A teaching role.
The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance in recruiting talent aligned to these values in the pursuit of research excellence. It is expected that applicants will have a successful track record and/or a well-defined research agenda in the fields listed above. Successful applicants should have the capability to undertake a wide spectrum of research and development work in built environment fields, with specialized focus on industrialised design and construction.
Founded in 1918 as the first faculty of architecture in Australia, the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning (AD&P) is an internationally acknowledged centre for intellectual, scientific and aesthetic research in architecture and the built environment, attracting the highest quality applicants in Australia and from abroad.
Our activities at AD&P range across urban design and planning, architecture, architectural science, and design. We possess the disciplinary range to respond to the great and conflicting challenges of our time – global urbanisation and global sustainability.
We also have arguably Australia’s best built environment laboratory infrastructure, including the only IEQ Lab (Indoor Environmental Quality) in the Southern Hemisphere, and our Illumination labs are currently undergoing a major upgrade to respond to new technologies. We have a major and ongoing investment in advanced digital modelling and fabrication including Australia’s best architectural robotics facilities that are part of the Design Modelling and Fabrication Lab (DMAF).
All applications must be submitted via the University of Sydney careers website. Visit sydney.edu.au/recruitment and search by the reference number 225/0218 to apply.
